Boozy Dewey and Boozier Elvis

This weekend I took a break from the big bad city for more relaxing ground and traveled down to my parent’s house (available to rent!) in Dewey Beach, Delaware to celebrate Dewey’s 25th Anniversary as an incorporated town. We’ve been going to Dewey and neighboring Rehoboth for a week every summer for literally as long as I can remember but this is the first time they’ve ever thrown a beach party with a bonfire and port-a-pottys and everything. Endless Bud Light, sand and cover bands. Yum! My dad broke out the video camera at one point, so maybe I’ll sort out my first multimedia post sometime soon and share the love.

It’s ironic that this town party happened at the same time that Dewey is in political upheaval: “Boozy Dewey Beach Peers Into Its Future”

This weekend Dewey was ALSO host to an Elvis Festival at the Rusty Rudder, where 20 Elvi competed for $5000. Dewey was fully decked out for this event, with signs up on all of the hotels: “The most rockin’ hotel in Dewey. Ask Elvis.” Etc. This was my favorite:

His name is Justin Shandor. Ok, so I didn’t actually see him perform, but it was refreshing to see a great 50s Presley look after all the polyester jumpsuits…and one of the drunk ladies behind the official festival table said he was going to be voted Audience Favorite. Sometimes you just need to trust to the drunk ladies. He was also only 20-something and the rest of them looked like they were about to keel face-first into the bay. Plus, I feel like I know him because mom and I saw him crossing Route 1 in the middle of the day on Saturday accompanied by one of his competitors and dressed in khaki shorts, flip flops and a big, wide-brimmed floppy hat.  Hire this one next time you’re in need of an Elvis.

In conclusion to this meandering reflection on the weekend: I think my favorite Elvis song is “Can’t Help Falling In Love With You.” What’s yours?
