The Night Larry Kramer Kissed Me

This weekend I watched David Drake’s The Night Larry Kramer Kissed Me on DVD with my dear BFF Kevro and was utterly enthralled. Now, I’ve tagged this post as a “flashback” since the original Obie-winning off-Broadway production was in 1993 and the film was made in 1999, but let me explain why:

For a few months, David has been working with me at Broadway.com as our dedicated photo editor…and I’ve fallen in awe. He’s funny and sweet and sharp and can swirl a photo op caption like nobody’s business. He also has a more than healthy career as a director. It’s inspiring.

His show is poetic and intense and unlike any piece of theater that I’ve ever seen, taking on multiple characters and hitting on politics / gym bunnies / AIDS / clubbing / musical theater / family / etc. from this totally fresh and totally David perspective. I told him recently what an honor it is to now be working alongside someone who I learned about in my Drama Lit classes at NYU…and of course, he giggled when I told him about watching the DVD: “That was back when I had hair! And when I went to the gym.” But for me, it’s not only an incredibly moving glimpse in to theater and the AIDS crisis at that time, it’s also such a pleasure to get to see and be a small part of this cool life that he’s made for himself in so many different aspects of the arts. Plus, he’s from Baltimore. Bravo Mr. Drake!
